Exploring 5 major trends from CPRJ Automotive Plastics Conference

The 13th Edition CPRJ Plastics in Automotive Conference and Showcase was successfully held at the Sheraton Shanghai Jiading Hotel today (November 14).

 

More than 450 experts from auto makers as well as parts, plastics products and materials, and equipment suppliers participated in the conference. During the conference, more than 30 insightful presentations were conducted. At the same time, about 60 exhibitors showcased their latest solutions for the automotive industry.

Notably, the launching ceremony for the “Circular Pathways for High - Value Plastics from End-of-Life Vehicles/Electronics in China and India” project of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) was concurrently held at the conference.


This project introduces the most cutting-edge technologies and sustainable design concepts to China and India, and promotes the recycling of high-value plastics (taking polycarbonate as an example) from end-of-life vehicles in China and electronic waste in India.

In her welcome remarks, Joyce Ye, Deputy Project Director, Adsale Publishing Ltd. (Adsale Group), pointed out that China's manufacturing industry, represented by the automotive sector, is developing rapidly and expanding to overseas. This new era not only presents unlimited opportunities, but also unprecedented challenges.

Meanwhile, Zefang Fan, Secretary General, Shanghai Automotive Parts Industry Association, remarked that the Chinese automotive industry is showing two development trends.

 

On the one hand, the production and sales outlook is improving, and the innovation of automobile's three electrical systems (battery, motor, electronic control) and three intelligent systems (driving, cockpit, and connectivity) is accelerating. On the other hand, the automotive industry is also facing many challenges such as fierce competition and increased tariffs on exports to Europe and the US.

 

Shanghai Automotive Parts Industry Association has carried out a series of programs on the transformation of the entire industry chain of new energy vehicles and intelligent manufacturing, aiming to help the automotive parts industry to develop steadily.

The Chinese automotive industry is actively exploring the journey of transformation to cope with the increasingly complex global market environment.

 

At today's conference, the determination of the whole automotive plastics value chain to seek breakthroughs was deeply felt, and the iterative innovation of automotive plastics and processing solutions was demonstrated.


Trend 1: Chinese automotive emterprises exploring international market

 

Taiying Wang, Consultant at National Trade Transformation and Upgrading Base (Auto and Parts), pointed out that in 2023, the main region for China's automobile exports was Europe (37%), followed by other regions in Asia, especially Russia, accounting for 17% of the total exports. All in all, there were 10 countries that achieved doubling growth.


Additionally, he emphasized that National Trade Transformation and Upgrading Base (Auto and Parts) will become an important frontier window for Chinese automotive enterprises exploring overseas markets.

When sharing the trends of globalization, Mingxing Zhu, Vice President of Innovation and New Business, Ningbo Autowin Electrical Co., Ltd., pointed out that Chinese automotive parts enterprises can gain benefits in expanding to overseas. The enterprises can not only leverage localized R&D to bring economic benefits, but also improve the product quality through adapting to the requirements and regulations of different countries.

In his presentation “Analysis of EU Automotive Environmental Protection and Low-Carbon Regulations and Countervailing Tariff Imposition”, Jason Chan, General Manager of AKS Envirotech Inc, explained that the core factors of carbon regulations are certification and approval, carbon calculation methods, carbon verification agencies, data collection, data compliance, etc., all of which need to be recognized by the EU, and those who falsify emission reduction certifications will be heavily fined.

Trend 2: More applications of sustainable materials 


James Xia, President of AUSELL, Shanghai Ausell Material Technology Co., Ltd., emphasized that driven by carbon tariffs in the EU and global recycled plastic policies, the application of PCR will be accelerated.

 

AUSELL provides a variety of recycled polycarbonate solutions, enabling traceability from recycling, sorting, crushing, washing to pelletizing, and assisting the high-value application of automotive recycled materials.

Stella Jia, Director of Public Affairs, NIO Inc., shared the automaker’s cutting-edge sustainable technologies. For example, NIO's self-developed high-end seating platform incorporates a 10-layer comfortable structure design, which uses dual-hardness MDI foam layer and skin-friendly Nappa leather layer; NIO's world first integrated shell coaxial induction electric drive system adopts cast aluminum rotors, envelope structure, and integrated silicon-based motor controller. In addition, NIO uses composite materials to enhance damping and noise reduction, achieving the ultimate NVH quality.

Dr. Frank Wang, Assistant Vice President, Yanfeng International Automotive Technology Co., Ltd., introduced the application of non-metal materials in automotive interior and exterior. For example, injection molding of car door panels using plant fiber modified PP materials (15% filling) can achieve 7% weight reduction and 20% carbon reduction; recycled carbon fiber reinforced PP and PA modified materials are used in high-strength injection molded parts, and bio-based polyurethane foam are used in the manufacturing of dashboards to reduce carbon emission.

Ashley Gao, Business Director, STAR PLASTICS, summarized the regulations on PFAS in the EU, the USand Japan, as well as the properties and hazards of PFAS. She also shared the PFAS-free recycled PC and PC/ABS material solutions launched by STAR PLASTICS. These solutions can meet the performance requirements of the electronics and automotive industries.

Kels Zhu, BDM, Rosti Integrated Manufacturing Solutions (Suzhou) Co., Ltd., introduced the company’s sustainable development strategy in the automotive industry. Rosti achieves low-carbon development mainly through green resin, lightweight and recyclable design, waste recycling and sustainable operations. It also incorporates spray-free treatment through sublimation decoration and RHCM technology.


According to him, compared with traditional injection molded painted parts, the use of RHCM technology can reduce carbon emission by more than 40%. Combining RHCM technology with recycled resin, carbon emissions can be reduced by more than 80%.

Fangfang Shao, Senior Engineer, Non-Metallic Materials, Body Division, SAIC Commercial Vehicle Technology Center, discussed the sustainable application of non-metal materials in automobiles through material management, control system and sustainable material application strategy. Case studies of using recycled materials in front-end modules, plastic tailgates, intercooler systems, and battery trays were also discussed.

Trend 3: Intelligentization and technology integration 


Junxian Li, Chief Engineer at Baic Motor Corporation Limited Automotive Research Institute, said that with intelligentization, automotive products are divided into consumer and industrial streams. The design of cockpit is showing the trends of customization and user experience upgrade. Besides, the modern design of interior emphasizes functional experience.

In his presentation, Alan Xu, Product Manager Propulsion Asia, Röchling Automotive Parts (Kunshan) Co., Ltd., talked about the trends in electrification and the impacts on automotive interior and exterior. He said that smart electric vehicle is the integrated product of consumer electronics and automotive industries, while aerodynamic design has become a key measure to improve driving range and performance.


As a key component of aerodynamic design, active air intake grilles are developing from single functionality to and integration of functionality and appearance. As the trend of vehicle electrification intensifies, smart interior and exterior decoration products will see high growth.

Xianjie Liu, Product Manager, MAHLE Automotive Technologies (China) Co., Ltd., introduced the inverter thermal management and lightweighting solutions. As said, plastic cooling water jacket is developing in the direction of miniaturization, lightweight and integration.

 

Plastic cooling water jackets generally use PPS+GF30 material, which has low water absorption/high volume resistivity, high toughness grade and good welding properties that help the jackets achieve a weight reduction of 35%. Furthermore, the one-piece molding allows the reduction of system parts by 40%, and there is no post-processing process, thus improving the overall manufacturing efficiency.

Bin Wu, New Energy Technology Center Manager, Shanghai Mann+Hummel Filter Co., Ltd., introduced the company’s innovative products for smart cockpits. The CAF air filter uses particle filter element, multi-filter filter element, antibacterial filter element, nano filter element and HEPA filter element to achieve high-quality air filtration.

Trend 4: Non-metallic material for futher lightweightiing


Regarding electrification development trends, Chengyin Yuan, General Manager, National New Energy Vehicle Technology Innovation Center, thinks that the development of cathode materials with high energy density, long life, high safety, and low cost is crucial for pure electric vehicles. In order to increase the power density of motors, high-speed motors are rapidly developing and popularizing. Si-IGBT is still a mainstream application, and BYD is leading the way in accelerating the localization of power semiconductors.

Dr Hui Jiang, CTO of Wuhan Huiqiang New Energy Materials Technology Co., Ltd., shared the challenges faced when developing ultra-thin lithium-ion battery separator. Lithium-ion battery separator is developing towards ultra-thin, high porosity and low permeability, high resistance to heat, puncture and stretch, as well as coating free.


He also pointed out that problems that ultra-thin battery separator face in battery end include low porosity and high permeability, poor discharge capacity retention, longer standing time, battery self-discharge, high-voltage breakdown, and thermal shrinkage.

Gavin Zhang, Sales Director at DOMO CHEMICALS, introduced the innovative application of TECHNYL high-performance material in new energy vehicles on thermal management, lightweighting, electrification, low-carbon sustainability and fuel cell.


One of the example is TECHNYL cooling circuit, which features resistance to dielectric oils and refrigerant, improving thermal management in vehicle. Another TECHNYL SHAPE grade is ideal for producing refrigerant lines and water pipes with different pressure requirements.

With the case study of intergrating SAIC GM Wuling’s technology into lightweight car body, Xian Lan, Senior Engineer from SAIC GM Wuling Automobile Company Limited, shared the R&D of lightweight solutions for front-end module, battery tray, hood and fenders, including integrating charge port door into car body with composite materials, car bumper with aluminum alloy, use of graphene microplate EPP material, and replacing sheet metal with polypropylene composite material.

Razer Ge, Marketing Manager of AVIENT CORPORATION, introduced the innovative materials for new energy vehicles. OnFlex TPE customized grade features hardness of Shore 60A, outstanding adhesiveness with PA12 and low compression set. It is ideal for use in cooling pipe joints in new energy battery. AVIENT also offers eight solutions to help customers achieve sustainability goals.

Eva He, AP Technical Service Manager of The Chemours Company, introduced Chemours’ high-performance materials (PTFE、PFA、FKM、PEP、PFPE、HFCs、HFO) in automotive application. For fuel vehicles, Chemours’ products can be used in electrical system, cables and semiconductors, engine and power system, chassis, transmission and driveshaft, and fuel system. For electric vehicles, the company’s product can be used in lithium-ion battery, electrical system, wires, cables and inverters, battery charging and motors, and bridges.

Leo Xiao, Senior Engineer of Technical Services at WANHUA CHEMICAL GROUP CO., LTD., introduced WANHUA CHEMICAL’s optical-grade polycarbonate application in car light, digital grille and high-end lens. Combined with digital grille, spray paint laser engraving, surface-form PRO processes, these materials improve quality and efficiency. In the future, WANHUA CHEMICAL will launch high-reflection PC/COC/COP composite materials.

Trend 5: Processing technology enhances efficiency


Shaozhang Xiong, Application Engineer at LK Injection Molding Machine Co., Ltd., introduced the injection molding and automation solutions for car bumpers. The company’s FORZA-III two-platen injection molding machine integrates magnetic frame and robot automation systems to achieve automated mold replacement, informatization, and automated production, effectively improving production efficiency and achieving product repeatability accuracy of ≤ 0.3%.

Shiping Dai, Internal Control from Shanghai Real Industrial Co., Ltd., presented the design of automotive injection molded parts, analyzing the impact of specific links such as tolerance and fit, material knowledge, mold design, process knowledge, and processing equipment on the quality of injection molded parts.


She stated that cost and quality are first designed and then manufactured, rather than inspected. The design benchmark, processing benchmark, and assembly benchmark should be consistent to reduce cumulative errors.

Bing Hian Co, Chief Technical Officer from MOTAN TAICANG CO., LTD., shared the application of Motan’s swift series in the automotive industry.


As a high-tech sub brand developed by motan, swift improves energy efficiency by optimizing process control through new digital technologies. With IE3 dryer, it can save approximately 10% of energy, and the design of the double molecular sieve bucket can use less energy and provide lower dew point. It also achieves energy savings by reducing the daily usage time of the regeneration heater and the energy consumption of the drying bucket heater.

He pointed out that top-end demand, such as national strategies, and policies and regulations, can inspire and develop new material application. User usage scenario is the focus of new material applications. In the future, use of non-metallic material in automotive application has gradually increased to 20-25%. These materials help build automotive interior and exterior with better health and environmental concern, as well as lightweight, intelligent and comfortable features, enhancing users’ experience.

 

Zhen Jin, Injection Moulding Engineer from Daramic Tianjin Pe Separator Co., Ltd., analyzed the load principle and optimization logic of dryer. He also discussed the possibilities of silver streak defects and invalid sizes in injection molded automotive parts.

In his presentation “Analysis of EU Automotive Environmental Protection and Low-Carbon Regulations and Countervailing Tariff Imposition”, Jason Chan, General Manager of AKS Envirotech Inc, explained that the core factors of carbon regulations are certification and approval, carbon calculation methods, carbon verification agencies, data collection, data compliance, etc., all of which need to be recognized by the EU, and those who falsify emission reduction certifications will be heavily fined.

Trend 2: More applications of sustainable materials 


James Xia, President of AUSELL, Shanghai Ausell Material Technology Co., Ltd., emphasized that driven by carbon tariffs in the EU and global recycled plastic policies, the application of PCR will be accelerated.

 

AUSELL provides a variety of recycled polycarbonate solutions, enabling traceability from recycling, sorting, crushing, washing to pelletizing, and assisting the high-value application of automotive recycled materials.

For example, NIO's self-developed high-end seating platform incorporates a 10-layer comfortable structure design, which uses dual-hardness MDI foam layer and skin-friendly Nappa leather layer; NIO's world first integrated shell coaxial induction electric drive system adopts cast aluminum rotors, envelope structure, and integrated silicon-based motor controller. In addition, NIO uses composite materials to enhance damping and noise reduction, achieving the ultimate NVH quality.

Dr. Frank Wang, Assistant Vice President, Yanfeng International Automotive Technology Co., Ltd., introduced the application of non-metal materials in automotive interior and exterior. For example, injection molding of car door panels using plant fiber modified PP materials (15% filling) can achieve 7% weight reduction and 20% carbon reduction; recycled carbon fiber reinforced PP and PA modified materials are used in high-strength injection molded parts, and bio-based polyurethane foam are used in the manufacturing of dashboards to reduce carbon emission.

Ashley Gao, Business Director, STAR PLASTICS, summarized the regulations on PFAS in the EU, the USand Japan, as well as the properties and hazards of PFAS. She also shared the PFAS-free recycled PC and PC/ABS material solutions launched by STAR PLASTICS. These solutions can meet the performance requirements of the electronics and automotive industries.

Kels Zhu, BDM, Rosti Integrated Manufacturing Solutions (Suzhou) Co., Ltd., introduced the company’s sustainable development strategy in the automotive industry. Rosti achieves low-carbon development mainly through green resin, lightweight and recyclable design, waste recycling and sustainable operations. It also incorporates spray-free treatment through sublimation decoration and RHCM technology.


According to him, compared with traditional injection molded painted parts, the use of RHCM technology can reduce carbon emission by more than 40%. Combining RHCM technology with recycled resin, carbon emissions can be reduced by more than 80%.

Case studies of using recycled materials in front-end modules, plastic tailgates, intercooler systems, and battery trays were also discussed.

Trend 3: Intelligentization and technology integration 


Junxian Li, Chief Engineer at Baic Motor Corporation Limited Automotive Research Institute, said that with intelligentization, automotive products are divided into consumer and industrial streams. The design of cockpit is showing the trends of customization and user experience upgrade. Besides, the modern design of interior emphasizes functional experience.

In his presentation, Alan Xu, Product Manager Propulsion Asia, Röchling Automotive Parts (Kunshan) Co., Ltd., talked about the trends in electrification and the impacts on automotive interior and exterior. He said that smart electric vehicle is the integrated product of consumer electronics and automotive industries, while aerodynamic design has become a key measure to improve driving range and performance.


As a key component of aerodynamic design, active air intake grilles are developing from single functionality to and integration of functionality and appearance. As the trend of vehicle electrification intensifies, smart interior and exterior decoration products will see high growth.

Xianjie Liu, Product Manager, MAHLE Automotive Technologies (China) Co., Ltd., introduced the inverter thermal management and lightweighting solutions. As said, plastic cooling water jacket is developing in the direction of miniaturization, lightweight and integration.

 

Plastic cooling water jackets generally use PPS+GF30 material, which has low water absorption/high volume resistivity, high toughness grade and good welding properties that help the jackets achieve a weight reduction of 35%. Furthermore, the one-piece molding allows the reduction of system parts by 40%, and there is no post-processing process, thus improving the overall manufacturing efficiency.

The CAF air filter uses particle filter element, multi-filter filter element, antibacterial filter element, nano filter element and HEPA filter element to achieve high-quality air filtration.

Trend 4: Non-metallic material for futher lightweightiing


Regarding electrification development trends, Chengyin Yuan, General Manager, National New Energy Vehicle Technology Innovation Center, thinks that the development of cathode materials with high energy density, long life, high safety, and low cost is crucial for pure electric vehicles. In order to increase the power density of motors, high-speed motors are rapidly developing and popularizing. Si-IGBT is still a mainstream application, and BYD is leading the way in accelerating the localization of power semiconductors.

Dr Hui Jiang, CTO of Wuhan Huiqiang New Energy Materials Technology Co., Ltd., shared the challenges faced when developing ultra-thin lithium-ion battery separator. Lithium-ion battery separator is developing towards ultra-thin, high porosity and low permeability, high resistance to heat, puncture and stretch, as well as coating free.


He also pointed out that problems that ultra-thin battery separator face in battery end include low porosity and high permeability, poor discharge capacity retention, longer standing time, battery self-discharge, high-voltage breakdown, and thermal shrinkage.

One of the example is TECHNYL cooling circuit, which features resistance to dielectric oils and refrigerant, improving thermal management in vehicle. Another TECHNYL SHAPE grade is ideal for producing refrigerant lines and water pipes with different pressure requirements.

Trend 5: Processing technology enhances efficiency


Shaozhang Xiong, Application Engineer at LK Injection Molding Machine Co., Ltd., introduced the injection molding and automation solutions for car bumpers. The company’s FORZA-III two-platen injection molding machine integrates magnetic frame and robot automation systems to achieve automated mold replacement, informatization, and automated production, effectively improving production efficiency and achieving product repeatability accuracy of ≤ 0.3%.

She stated that cost and quality are first designed and then manufactured, rather than inspected. The design benchmark, processing benchmark, and assembly benchmark should be consistent to reduce cumulative errors.

As a high-tech sub brand developed by motan, swift improves energy efficiency by optimizing process control through new digital technologies. With IE3 dryer, it can save approximately 10% of energy, and the design of the double molecular sieve bucket can use less energy and provide lower dew point. It also achieves energy savings by reducing the daily usage time of the regeneration heater and the energy consumption of the drying bucket heater.

User usage scenario is the focus of new material applications. In the future, use of non-metallic material in automotive application has gradually increased to 20-25%. These materials help build automotive interior and exterior with better health and environmental concern, as well as lightweight, intelligent and comfortable features, enhancing users’ experience.

 

Zhen Jin, Injection Moulding Engineer from Daramic Tianjin Pe Separator Co., Ltd., analyzed the load principle and optimization logic of dryer. He also discussed the possibilities of silver streak defects and invalid sizes in injection molded automotive parts.
