BOBST is one of the world’s leading suppliers of substrate processing, printing and converting equipment and services for the label, flexible packaging, folding carton and corrugated industries.

Its booth is bustling with live presentations on flexible packaging technology, Industry 4.0 vision and sustainable production solutions, with video demonstrations of the gravure press using water-based inks, especially the new RS 3.0 HS gravure machine and NOVA DA 800 laminator.

Lubin Lu, Zone Business Director Greater China, Business Unit Printing & Converting, Flexible Packaging & Label, BOBST.

“The flexible packaging market is booming, the interest in our equipment and process solutions is high and continues to grow.  The success is consolidating our position as a technology leader in the Chinese market,” said Lubin Lu, BOBST’s Zone Business Director Greater China, Business Unit Printing & Converting, Flexible Packaging & Label.

Unlock potential of the Chinese packaging market

In 2020, due to COVID-19, the demand for “home consumption” packaging in China rose rather than dropped, thus bringing a small wave of investment in printing equipment, and BOBST is fortunate to have more Chinese companies as customers.

In the selection of new equipment suppliers, Lubin Lu said that packaging companies now focus more on “high capacity, low emission, new technology” in line with the industry-oriented requirements, such as ink printing and stable and reliable equipment, which gives BOBST a good opportunity.

By setting up a new factory in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, BOBST has expressed confidence and determination in the broad prospects of the flexible packaging market in China.

Lubin Lu expects that by learning from each other and its domestic counterparts, the technical level of China's printing and converting industry will upgrade to a higher level.

BOBST showcases its innovative solutions for printing and laminating.

Minimize harmful emissions

Over the past few years, BOBST has invested heavily on sustainable development. The company’s ink printing research has been tested by its partners in the industry, achieving remarkable result with the content of VOCs below 10%.

Reinforcing its position at the forefront of flexible packaging technology is an industry award in December 2020. “The Competence Center and Laboratory at BOBST (Changzhou), which is our facility dedicated to flexible packaging technology, has recently been awarded a certification as a Demonstration and Training Base for Alternative Applications to VOCs in the packaging and printing industry from the Printing and Printing Equipment Industries Association of China (PEIAC),” added Lubin Lu.

Gravure printing equipment catered to China

As gravure forms the lion’s share of the printing technology of choice in China, BOBST focuses on the capabilities and performance of its solutions developed to fulfill the specific requirements of the Chinese market, including high automation, low emissions and capabilities to handle a multitude of substrates at speed with new eco-friendly materials.

These equipment include RS 3.0 PLUS, RS 3.0 HS, NOVA DA 800 Laminator, NOVA CO 800 coater, CI Flexo Vision C1 and Vision K5.

Newly launched in March 2021, the RS 3.0 HS gravure printing press delivers high quality printing at speeds up to 450 m/min with fully automated job changeovers for both solvent and water-based ink printing.

The machine features automated solutions and smart trolleys that make job preparation and changeovers fast and easy, for the efficient production of short, medium and long runs of flexible packaging and other flexible material applications.

Unveiled in the second half of 2020, NOVA DA 800 offers the top-class solution in the field of lamination to handle the widest combination of materials, including new eco-friendly substrates. Features include the availability of BOBST flexo trolley for high-speed coating of solvent-based adhesive with high solid content.

Newest process technologies

BOBST exclusive process technologies include the latest developments in vacuum metallizing processes, such as AluBond, AlOx Conversion Solution, and the mono-material ready to recycle laminated substrates.

The BOBST AluBond process is well-established in the market as a metallizing process for polyolefin-based substrates. Initially developed to increase metal adhesion on the most commonly used substrates, when applied to CPP and BOPP films, AluBond also provides enhancement of oxygen (OTR) and water vapour (WVTR) barrier performance.

With the latest market demands for sustainable packaging films, AluBond is also being used to produce high barrier metallized CPP, BOPP and MDO PE mono-material laminates.

Meanwhile, the AlOx GEN II process has been developed primarily for the BOPP film market and gives better barrier performance at a reduced optical density and transparency straight off the machine.

The result is a High Barrier AlOx BOPP offering a solution to sustainability requirements. In combination with the right BOPP film substrate, it shows great potential for a fully recyclable transparent barrier PP mono-material packaging solution.
