Janet Tong, General Manager of Adsale Group made her online welcome remarks and expressed the gratitude to the co-organizers and supporting units. She noted that China's medical device market is currently the second largest one in the world and its market size is expected to exceed RMB 900 billion in 2022 with a growth rate of more than 20%.

By 2028, the global medical plastics market is expected to reach US$48.3 billion at a CAGR of 7.5% during the forecast period, according to the latest report of Grand View Research. The pandemic has boosted huge global demand for plastic materials in medical applications.

What important signals are released by the new policies in China?

China has implemented new policies related to medical devices this year. The revised version of “Regulation on the Supervision and Administration of Medical Devices” sets new rules on management, registrant systems and acceleration of medical device innovations. What are the impacts of the new policies?

In his sharing, Lin Senyong, President of China Chamber of Commerce of Medicines & Health Products Importers & Exporters International Cooperation Branch of Medical Devices, analyzed the Regulation and pointed out that there are eight focuses, for example, the registrant system, product check, clinical evaluation and post-market supervision, which the industry should pay attention to. He believes the Regulation aims to promote technological innovation in the medical device industry, ensure industrial safety, strengthen risk management of processes and lead to a joint supervision.

On the other hand, Dr. Jiang Hongyan, Vice President of R&D Support and Shared Service at Shanghai MicroPort Medical (Group) Co., Ltd., reported that China is focusing on the development of high-performance diagnosis and treatment equipment, including imaging equipment and medical robots, high-value medical consumables like fully degradable vascular stents, and mobile medical products such as wearable and remote diagnosis and treatment, under the plan of “Made in China 2025”.

Advanced processing technologies improve efficiency and quality

Demand from medical device manufacturers for high-efficiency precision injection molding equipment keeps rising, creating opportunities for equipment manufacturers as well as promoting technological R&D and upgrades.

He mentioned that Hongrita is using its 32-cavity cold runner with valve needle gate to produce liquid silicone multi-cavity seals which are used for household COVID-19 testing boxes. The production capacity reaches 62,000 units per day. He added that the anti-bacterial liquid silicone products are increasingly used, the company is making product prototypes by optimizing static mixing parameters and having third-party anti-bacterial and compliance tests.

Talking about anti-pandemic consumable materials, Dr. Wang Guofeng, General Manager of Advanced Medical Materials Division at Henan Tuoren Medical Device Research Institute Co., Ltd., remarked that the development of these materials should base on three elements: market size and trend study, competitive advantages and disadvantages, strategic and cost analysis. The company has established innovative transformation service platforms in respond to customer needs, covering material technology development, intelligent technology development, product design, and testing.

This type of medical devices generally comes into direct contact with the patient, so high performance is required. For instance, it has to offer strong physical and mechanical properties and very good biocompatibility to ensure safety.

Sterilization packaging innovation speeds up

Regarding current development status and trends of medical device packaging industry, Song Yiqin, Vice Director of China Association for Medical Devices Industry, believes that China still has great market potential. The products of Chinese medical device packaging producers can meet the basic packaging needs of domestic medical device companies, however, the R&D level of most domestic medical device packaging producers needs to be improved, their capability of providing large-scale supply also needs to be strengthened. 

According to him, with the improvement of living standards and increased awareness of safety precautions, sterilization technoogy will be further applied in other hospital supplies, home care first aid, pet medical supplies, and so on.

Peter Chen, Head of Business Development of Henkel Packaging Adhesive Business Unit at Henkel (China) Investment Co., Ltd., said that the company has developed HM PSA hydrocolloid for the fast-growing functional medical wound dressing market. It performs good moisturizing and breathability to help wound healing. Henkel's paper-plastic bag sterilization packaging adopts water-based heat-seal coating, and its other Tyvek packaging uses water-based/hot-melt heat-seal coating, he noted.
