Ticona introduces low-chlorine content Fortron PPS developed for E&E applications

Source: Date :2008-07-30 Editor :(ACH)
Ticona Engineering Polymers, the world's largest supplier of linear polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), announced this Monday (July 28) the launch of a new grade of Fortron PPS that reduces the amount of chlorine contained in the formulation. This will enable electrical and electronic component original equipment manufacturers and their suppliers to design and make products that will comply with anticipated halogen-free industry standards.

According to Ed Hallahan, marketing manager — Vectra LCP and Fortron PPS, the new Fortron PPS 1140A66 fuses improved polymerization and original compound technologies to reduce chlorine concentrations to below 900 parts per million. This reduction in chlorine concentrations is accomplished without the loss of mechanical properties that make these PPS resins a material of choice for making connectors, switches and other electrical components.

Fortron PPS resins satisfy the UL94V-0 flammability rating without the addition of flame retardants. Also, Fortron PPS is well suited for use in applications where exacting electrical properties are required, such as jigs used in semiconductor production and testing.

This new Fortron PPS resin is in direct response to market demand for low-chlorine content and non-brominated products. In the past few years, European and American manufacturers specified non-halogenated materials for parts used in computers, mobile phones, game consoles and other information terminals. In addition, some manufacturers are beginning to control the amount of chlorine contained in products.
